School Based Traineeships

What is a School Based Traineeship?

Students are enrolled full-time at School and work part-time with a Host Employer with all the conditions, responsibilities and benefits of such employment.

Typically a school-based trainee will combine one or two days a week in a workplace with three or four days a week at school. The on-the-job component is managed by SMYL Community Services. Trainees are paid a training wage for the duration of the program.

A School Based Traineeship represents an excellent opportunity for students to begin a career while still at school, enabling students to gain secondary graduation, an industry recognised qualification and a history of paid employment. Traineeship students complete their program competitive and ready for full time employment or further education and training.

SMYL’s Role in School Based Traineeships

SMYL’s role in managing your School Based Traineeship is to:

  • Coordinate the selection and recruitment of the Trainees establish the Training Agreement with the Employer, Trainee and their Parent/Guardian.
  • Pay the wages to the Trainee in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment.
  • Administer all workplace matters.
  • Provide counselling and pastoral care for the Trainee.
  • Provide support for workplace Trainers and Supervisors.
  • Liaise with Employer, Trainee, School and Parents.
  • Monitor the off the job training of the Traineeship to ensure industry standards are met and to monitor the on the job component of the traineeship.
  • Benefits of a School Based Traineeship for the Trainee.

At the completion of Year 12, the School Based Traineeship participants receive a Certificate II in their chosen Industry area, as well as Secondary Graduation (WACE) consisting of Statement of Results and indicating all National Training Modules passed.

In addition, participants acquire a greater awareness and insight into industry and employment requirements, a higher level of work readiness and a better understanding of the opportunities available. This experience will prove invaluable in their later working life.

The program provides a broad base of generic and specific units of competency which gives trainees the flexibility to launch careers such as:

Entry into the industry area using the skills gained in the traineeship.
Further career advancement opportunities by completing studies at a higher certificate level.
Articulation from TAFE to a university degree.

Minimum Requirements

The minimum requirement for registration of School Based Traineeships by the WA Department of Training and Employment are as follows:

  • One year to eighteen months nominal duration.
  • 8 hours paid employment and training per week.
  • A complete training agreement registered with the WA Department of Training and Employment.

This program is being delivered by SMYL Community Services on behalf of The Department of Education & Training and DEWR.

Year 10 Indigenous School Based Traineeships

What is a Year 10 Indigenous School Based “Workplace Readiness Traineeship”?

Year 10 School Based “Workplace Readiness Traineeships” are aimed at vocationally oriented students with the dual goals of increasing school retention rates and improving career and employment opportunities. Students are enrolled full time at school, attend TAFE part-time and work part-time with a host employer.

At the end of year 10, in addition to having completed regular school subjects, students are awarded the “Certificate I in Workplace Readiness” from TAFE and possess a paid employment record.

The year 10 traineeship prepares students for progression into year 11 and 12 school based traineeships which offer Certificate II Industry specific traineeships. As well, students maintain their study towards the Year 12 West Australian Certificate of Education.

Structure of the Year 10 Indigenous School Based “Workplace Readiness Traineeship”

Typically, a school based trainee will combine one day a week in a workplace, one day a week at TAFE and three days at school. Trainees are paid a training wage for the duration of the program at no cost to the host employer. The on-the-job component, including trainee payment, is managed by SMYL Community Services.

SMYL’s role in the Year 10 School Based Traineeship is to:

  • Coordinate the selection and recruitment of the trainees.
  • Arrange a work placement for the trainee.
  • Pay the wages to the trainee in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment and administer all workplace matters.
  • Provide support and pastoral care for the trainee.
  • Provide support for workplace trainers and supervisors.
  • Liaise with employer, Trainee, School, TAFE and parents

The Host Employer’s role in the Year 10 School Based Traineeship is to:

  • Provide 120 hours (15 days) of fully subsidised employment to the trainee.
  • Provide a workplace that complies with occupational Safety and Health standards.
  • Liaise with SMYL and trainee.

TAFE’s role is to:

  • Provide formal training in units of competency in the Level I Certificate, “Workplace Readiness”.
  • Liaise with SMYL, trainee and school.

Aboriginal School Based Traineeships

What is an Aboriginal School Based Traineeship?

An Aboriginal School Based Traineeship represents an excellent opportunity for Aboriginal students to begin a career while still at school, enabling students to gain secondary graduation, an industry recognised qualification and a history of paid employment. Trainees are paid a training wage for the duration of the program.

How does it work?

Students are enrolled full time at School and work part time with a Host Employer with the conditions, responsibilities and benefits of such employment. Typically a school based trainee will combine one or two days a week in a workplace, with three or four days a week at school.

SMYL is a non-profit community based organisation with a long history in the provision of employment and training programs in the metropolitan region. As a Group Training Scheme we recruit and employ trainees and apprentices, placing them with host employers for varying periods of time.

SMYL’s role in the Aboriginal School Based Traineeship:

  • Coordinate the selection and recruitment of the Trainees
  • Establish the Training Agreement with the Employer, Trainee and their Parent/Guardian
  • Pay wages to the Trainee in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment
  • Administer all workplace matters
  • Provide counselling and pastoral care for the Trainee
  • Provide support for workplace Trainers and Supervisors

  • A career in the industry area using the skills gained in the School Based New Apprenticeship
  • Articulation from SNBA to Apprenticeship

Minimum Requirements

The minimum requirement for registration of School Based New Apprenticeships by SMYL Community Services are as follows:

  • Completion of Year 12
  • 8 hours paid employment per week
  • A complete training agreement registered with the WA Department of Education and Training
